Chomp by Carl Hiaasen

Hiassen seems to know how to build up stock characters well. I could tell about 3/4 of the way through that the spoiled tv star was on his way to a transformation. Unfortunately, he was the only character who really developed into 3-D. It's more or less the same criticism I have of Harry Potter 1--Harry doesn't actually do anything as a character, he's just a foil for the plot. The same is true with Wahoo here. I was set up in a Dickens-like way to identify with him emotionally from the beginning and then to follow him through the story.
Hiassen has good pacing, writes believable dialog, and has a kind of Hollywood sense for storytelling. So it wasn't a waste of time any more than watching a show (although I do wish it didn't take so long to read an 'I liked it' book). Sometimes I wish goodreads had room for figurative connotations, such as "I liked it fine."
