I used to keep this book on hand when teaching in the 1990s just to let kids walk over and read if they wanted to. I always watched out of the corner of my eye. It was one of those, "Come over here, you've got to see this" kinds of books. I never read it aloud, because I didn't want to handle the angry parents. But it's a priceless experience of a book. All other lampoons of the alphabet book are pale and distant stars by comparison. Edward Gorey is a hero.
