Review: Everything on a Waffle

Everything on a Waffle
Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Our family went on a Polly Horvath binge after reading Mr & Mrs Bunny [b:Mr. and Mrs. Bunny—Detectives Extraordinaire!|11148223|Mr. and Mrs. Bunny—Detectives Extraordinaire!|Polly Horvath|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320541494s/11148223.jpg|16071885]. Horvath returns to many of the same themes across most of her books, and she does not shy away from difficult humanity and sticky family issues. The quirkiness of life the way she paints it in a small resort town reminded me a lot of our days in Gunnison, Colorado. Local color and interesting characters could easily become schmarmy, but Horvath avoids this in favor of complicating things. She also seems to avoid easy resolutions. I mean, of course we know Primrose's parents will be found, but when how and what this does to the story are other matters.
