Review: The Trolls

The Trolls
The Trolls by Polly Horvath

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my favorite from the Horvath binge (my dad preferred Canning Season). Horvath seems to enjoy the Mary Poppins trope, but she does it very differently. Instead of resolving everything, we just get to find out in a roundabout way why the kids' dad doesn't really like this boisterous, storytelling aunt. The fact that the kids get to spend the week with her (learning a lot about the family they never heard) feels like one of those happy accidents of life, not like a deus ex machina flying out of the sky on an umbrella.

Because each story is a stand-alone episode, this book is great for a read-aloud with every night's episode reaching an interesting conclusion.
